The membranes of Single Ply Roofing offer numerous materials to choose from. The main characteristic of these materials is being designed in such a way as to be installed in just one layer. Additionally, they are substantially flexible as well as providing UV radiation resistance. These qualities make single ply roofing materials superior to other roofing products. Traditionally available in black and white finish, the materials are typically fastened with glue, and can be installed directly on top of roof insulation materials.
Types of Single Ply Roofing Membranes
Single ply roofing membranes are usually categorized into two groups: Thermosets and Thermoplastics.
PVC and TPO are the most commonly used thermoplastic single-ply membranes, both of which are plastic-based materials. Thermoplastic membranes are typically manufactured to include a layer of reinforcement, usually fiberglass or polyester which will provide added strength and durability.
The Process of Single Ply Roofing Installation
The building and it’s unique situation will determine the type of single ply roofing installation that needs to be done. A roof that is ballasted is usually the ideal method of installation, when the structural roof is able to withstand the additional loads. Mechanically fastened single ply roofing may be ideal for a wood roof or steel roof, suitable for all types of slopes without limitations.
Another installation option is fully adhered single ply roofing, in which the membrane is attached with the manufacturers recommendation of adhesive, such as asphalt, water based, or solvent based. In this process, the finished surface is smooth and can be coupled with colored membrane materials that provide more aesthetically pleasing surface options.
